It's challenging to keep up with local news, particularly the items that may impact your life, your commute, or your community. That's why each week we compile a few interesting developments happening in the area.

"MWCOG's most recent forecast shows that the region remains on-track to add 1.5 million people, or 648,000 households, by 2045. This growth will be primarily due to the addition of 1 million jobs in the same timeframe."

After real estate agents reported “packs of investors” at open houses in Virginia’s Arlington and Alexandria in December, the number of houses and condos on the market has been seriously depleted. Long & Foster said, overall, the number of homes on the market in January in Arlington County was down 38 percent from a year ago, and the median price of what closed in Arlington last month was up 10 percent from a year ago, at $607,500.

Washington Business Journal: Amazon hopes to hire most of HQ2 locally

"Amazon.com Inc.'s second home in the D.C. region will be a neighborhood — not a campus — of largely locally hired employees who eat at local restaurants and maybe bring their dogs to work, according to Holly Sullivan, who was among the leaders of the e-commerce giant's HQ2 search."

"Late last year, the City of Alexandria launched its Transit Vision plan, which seeks to improve and adjust bus services by 2030. The goal is to have a better system in place to serve the anticipated growth and needs of the changing city of 150,000 residents for the next 10-20 years."

"A big change is coming to King Street west of Route 1 in Old Town — a new mixed-use development with plenty of fresh red brick, and maybe even some very old red brick."

"Over the last two decades, Eden Center has remained a central point for the area’s Vietnamese community. Frank says that about 90 percent of the shopping center’s businesses remain Vietnamese-owned (the other 10 percent are other Asian nationalities like Thai and Korean)."

"The fun thing with Metro is that you can go almost anywhere in the DMV and you can also travel backward in time. At the moment, this takes us back to 1999 or so, when Metro’s hours were last extended to accommodate the city’s nightlife."

"Interest rates remain at their lowest level in a year. Freddie Mac reported 4.35 percent with an average 0.5 point as the average for a 30-year mortgage on Thursday, unchanged from last week. A year ago, rates came in at 4.43 percent."

"Arlington County could see the number of major development plans triple with the arrival of Amazon.com Inc.'s second headquarters. At least, that’s what County Manager Mark Schwartz wants to be ready for. “On a typical year, the county works through six site plans,” Schwartz said during an Arlington board budget meeting Thursday. “We expect that number could be as high as 18 in fiscal year 2020.”

"The new headquarters of Amazon will not have a footprint in the city of Alexandria, but the technology giant’s arrival is “the catalyst” in plans to build the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus."
