It's challenging to keep up with local news, particularly the items that may impact your life, your commute, or your community. That's why each week we compile a few interesting developments happening in the area.

"Maryland transportation officials have determined that building another bridge near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge would relieve traffic backups better than an additional crossing farther to the north or south, according to state findings released Tuesday."

"Workers are on track to complete renovations and repair on Braddock Road, King Street-Old Town, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn and Franconia-Springfield stations on time, officials with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority have said in recent days. The stations have been closed since May 25, affecting roughly 17,000 riders."

Goldfinch, a new home and lifestyle boutique, opened at 806 N. Fairfax St. in March. The store is a product of Akseizer Design Group, an interior design company that has worked on properties in the Washington D.C. area, New York, Miami, Massachusetts and the West Coast.

"The arrival of pumpkin-spiced everything is a reminder that fall is just around the corner — and a ton of Alexandria events are, too. Two art festivals, a cider festival, a car show, a homes tour and much more are coming up as the weather cools off. Pull up your calendar and make a note of these fall events."

The owners of A-Town Bar and Grill are opening a new German beer hall this week that will replace the popular gathering place for hard-partying bros in Ballston. Bronson is scheduled to open Thursday, August 29, in the 6,000-square-foot space at 4100 Fairfax Drive in Arlington.

Long-term mortgage rates rose ever so slightly this week, but remain quite low by historical standards. On Thursday, Freddie Mac reported 3.58 percent with an average 0.5 point as the average for a 30-year mortgage, up three basis points from last week. Long-term rates still remain at their lowest level in almost three years.

"The widened stretch of the Custis Trail through Rosslyn finally opened to pedestrian and cyclist traffic late yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. The new improvements widen the Custis Trail along westbound Lee Highway from N. Lynn and N. Oak streets, a popular stretch of the trail that connects the Metro corridor to the Key Bridge and the Mount Vernon Trail."

"A small section at the base of King Street in Alexandria, Virginia could become a car-free zone. The project is still in the research stage. Right now city staff are looking into closing some combination of the 100 block and 200 block of King Street to car traffic to make the space even more attractive and useful. This section of the street leads right into Waterfront Park and the Potomac River."
